Author Visit: Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen

Last Thursday, we enjoyed our second author visit of the year. Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen came to spend the entire day at our school and she was absolutely fantastic. She preferred working with smaller groups, so we were able to schedule 5 presentations PLUS two kindergarten visits! She also agreed to have lunch with some fifth graders! I know! Incredible! She presented for each grade separately, with the exception of first and second grades, who came together. Sudipta did a writing activity with 5th and 6th graders, as well. I know what you are thinking - this is just too good to be true. Nope. All true. She was awesome.
To prepare for the visit, I spent several weeks reading many of her books to every grade. We really focused on her picture books, even though she has written some non-fiction for older students. Third through sixth graders also spent some time on her website, which is very well done. Ms Bardhan-Quallen really understands what kids like, and the kinds of things they want to know. She's very good at talking with students - not "at" them. Even when students were coming in to drop off last-minute posters, she made students feel very comfortable. In short, I would highly recommend considering Ms. Bardhan-Quallen for your next author visit.
