Thing 2: RSS

Honestly, I haven't played around with RSS feeds in quite a long time. I had an iGoogle page a few years ago (I'm sure thanks to Polly) and while I liked it then, I had stopped using it. The reason is that I'd replaced it with Twitter. It wasn't a conscious decision - it just happened! As I played around with NetVibes and iGoogle, I thought, "Yeah, Twitter is WAY better than this!" However - the more I played, the less sure I became.
The big drawback of Twitter is that if you are not on it all the time, it is very possible - likely, even - that you'll miss something since it is arranged chronologically. It's nice to see the last few updates in the RSS readers because you can then choose to read or not. I found myself clicking and reading from the iGoogle page much more than I do in Twitter. I don't know what that means, if anything, it's merely an observation. :)
I experimented with NetVibes, iGoogle, and Google Reader. I kinda like NetVibes, but it is totally wonky! I had no trouble accessing it at home, but when I got to school it just wasn't working correctly. There was no where to log in! Then, the next day, NetVibes was blocked at school. Crumbs! I can still check it out at home, but I'd rather have a tool I can use in both places.
I think the tool I will be using the most frequently is iGoogle. I like it even more now that I discovered that in addition to being able to organize in tabs, I can click on a feed title and view entire posts for just that feed a la Google Reader. This is what I'm talkin' about! I like that sometimes I can see just headlines, and sometimes I can see whole posts.

One question - isn't there a way for me to sync up my Google Reader and iGoogle feeds? C'mon - I know someone has to know that.... :)

More to follow at a later date!

  1. There's a Google Reader gadget for iGoogle; I don't know if that will help with what you want it to do or not.

  2. Do you want to move all the stuff you have in Google Reader to iGoogle? You can use the EXPORT option in Google Reader to make a file of all the RSS feeds you follow there. Then use the IMPORT feature in iGoogle to add them there.

  3. So good to know that when I can't figure out what I'm doing, I can ask you, Annie! I'm still back on the RSS week - sigh - so am adding you now to keep up with your blog!
