I saw this today and thought it interesting and important enough to share. In this 15 minute TED talk, Patrick Carman talks about what kids are choosing to do instead of reading, and his ideas on tapping into what they're doing rather than ignoring it.
A little background for anyone unfamiliar with his books, his most recent ones (including Skeleton Creek series and Trackers series) include an online video component as part of the story. To us, this may seem like a distraction or even gimmicky, but to our students, it is simply a way to reaching them where they are, which is online and engaged with technology. I thought this talk was pretty insightful, and I loved that his main focus is connecting today's kids with books through the technology.
On a side note, I also thought his comment about passwords was interesting. From now on, I will choose passwords for students more carefully! :)
What do you think of the talk?
